A peptide complex called Pal-KTTKS proves advantageous in anti-aging products

A study of more than 6,000 women seeking natural, noticeable results from their skin care products reveals that most women feel that fine lines, wrinkles, and dryness are common signs of aging. Participants said wrinkles made them appear older than they actually were. They also felt sagging skin, particularly along the jawline, was disturbing. Thinner, dryer, less-pliable skin was also a common complaint when participants were asked about skin and aging.

This led researchers to conduct studies to determine what causes aging at the skin’s surface. One of the primary differences between young and old skin is that aged skin loses its ability to repair itself from damage caused by free radicals. The result is wrinkles, loss of texture, impaired barrier function, dryness, sagging, and age spots.

As we age, the natural cycle of skin regeneration slows. Our skin produces less protein, so the outer layer of skin becomes thinner and less resilient. Then, as the collagen structure weakens, the skin loses its elasticity, and fine lines and wrinkles appear. Our skin loses that healthy, youthful resilience we are all striving to maintain.

There are some powerful ingredients that can help to retain precious moisture. Certain types of peptides, short combinations of amino acids, send signals to fibroblasts to begin generating new proteins. Fibroblasts are particular types of cells that are responsible for producing the supporting structure of the skin, including collagen.

A topical Pal-KTTKS application has been shown to reduce the appearance of wrinkles while also being gentle to the moisture barrier. Pal-KTTKS is a peptide otherwise known as palmitoyl-pentapeptide 3. It is a modified chain of five amino acids developed as a cosmetic active ingredient. With Pal-KTTKS, the cycle of regeneration can begin again.

In studies by Proctor and Gamble, the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology reported on the efficacy of Pal-KTTKS on crow’s feet. Two studies were conducted in women 30 to 70 years old with moderate to distinct wrinkles around the eye. Four products which included -KTTKS peptide complex and SPF 30 daytime lotion were used daily. Results indicated that after 4 weeks of treatment, there was improvement in the smoothness of skin around the eyes, thus showing reduced depth of wrinkles.

Another study presented to the World Congress on Dermatology supported the conclusion that Pal-KTTKS was safe and effective in improving the appearance of photo-aged skin, or skin that has had significant sun exposure over time. Pal-KTTKS is commercially known as Matrixyl and can be found in various skin creams.

Matrixyl is the peptide sequence of Pal-KTTKS, or micronized collagen. Collagen is the most abundant protein in the skin, and as we age, the body makes less of it. Matrixyl helps the skin produce more collagen. It gives visible and long-lasting results to aging skin. Pal-KTTKS aids in reducing deep lines and wrinkles by helping skin cells to stimulate bioactive collagen synthesis. The skin cells will then produce more collagen from within that can be used to add to the existing structural tissues.
