If using the wrong foundation color has you looking like a pasty mess, or tweezing your brows too much has you looking permanently surprised, you’re guilty of committing a beauty faux pas. Although these little beauty mishaps can be frustrating at the time, there are ways you can avoid them in the future.
Concealer/Foundation
Whether you’ve picked the wrong color or simply used too much, making a mistake on your concealer/foundation application can affect your whole look. If you’re not sure what color you should choose, ask a professional at a cosmetic counter in the mall or where you purchase your makeup. Many women will need to buy two different shades — one for the winter and one for the summer. When it comes to application, less is often more. If you’ve purchased a quality product, it should offer good coverage. That means applying too much will make your skin look pasty. Cosmopolitan magazine recommends using a makeup brush and liquid foundation to get thin, even coverage that’s similar to airbrushing. Keep in mind that concealer is meant to conceal blemishes and other imperfections you want to hide. It’s not necessary to apply concealer all over your face.
Lip Liner
When it comes to your mouth, there are few things more unsightly than a dark ring around your lips. Many women make the mistake of using a lip liner that’s darker than their lipstick to line their lips, when they should actually use one that’s lighter. You can also choose a lip liner that’s close to the natural color of your lips. Another way to avoid the dreaded dark ring is by applying lip liner all over your lips instead of just on the outline. Not only will the liner help your lipstick stay on longer, it will also keep it from smudging.
Eyeshadow
If people are confusing your smokey eye for a black eye, you’re definitely doing something wrong. Instead of just slapping the darkest eye makeup you have on your eyes, make sure you use at least three shades of a similar hue. Although you can create a smokey eye with any colors, make sure you’re using a highlight/base color, a medium color, and a dark color. The most important part of creating a smokey eye is blending. For best results, use a fluffy blending brush and blend from the inside corner of the eye to the outside.
Tweezing
If you’ve ever butchered your eyebrows trying to create the perfect arch, you’re not alone. Fortunately, thicker, natural-shaped eyebrows are now in style. But just because you don’t have to do as much plucking, doesn’t mean you should abandon the tweezers completely. Before tweezing, use a brow pencil to create the desired shape of your brows. The brow pencil not only serves as a guide, it also gives you an idea of how your brow shape will fit your face. For best results, try tweezing your brows after showering, while using a regular mirror. Many women use a magnifying mirror to see better, but that type of mirror can be deceiving, making it appear that you have more hairs to pluck than you actually do. If you’ve made a mistake on your brows and plucked too many hairs, don’t panic. Use a brow pencil that matches your brow color to fill in any sparse areas. By the way, if tweezing your brows is just too painful to bare, dab a small amount of numbing gel on your brows before tweezing them.
