Fitness Myths and Truths

In health and fitness, there is so much information and it seems to change so quickly, sometimes you can’t separate fact from fiction. Here are a few common myths and surprising truths for the next time you hit the gym or the trail.

The first myth is that crunches are all you need to get flat abs. But crunches aren’t the best way to get a six pack because they don’t burn off a lot of energy and don’t help much with fat loss. Planks and bridges are much more effective than crunches in whittling your waistline. Remember that abs are made in the kitchen too. No matter how many exercises you do, if you’re eating crappy food, you won’t be able to see those chiseled abs.

Another myth is that the more you sweat, the more calories you’re burning. Sweat is just a natural response to attempt to regulate your body temperature and cool you down. Just because you’re particularly drenched after a session could just mean it was especially warm outside or in the studio.

You may avoid running because you’ve heard it is bad for your knees. While it can be a stress on your joints, studies show that runners’ knees are no less healthy than non-runners’ knees. Experts recommend doing a full body strength workout twice a week in addition to your running schedule to build muscles and support joints. This will reduce your chance of getting injured.

Lastly, you may have heard that stretching helps your body recover from a grueling workout faster, but that simply isn’t true.

Now that a few fitness myths have been busted, how about some surprising truths?

Did you know that skipping sleep can cause weight gain? Studies show that women who slept less than seven hours were more likely to gain weight because sleep deprivation increases the production of the hormone ghrelin, which triggers hunger.

It seems yoga is in the news lately claiming to be a big calorie burner, but it simply isn’t true. Yoga is more for toning, increasing flexibility and strength but doesn’t burn many calories.

Lastly, don’t worry because lifting weights won’t bulk you up and make you look like a man. Women have less muscle tissue and produce lower levels or testosterone than men so they are less likely to gain significant muscles.

How to Make Pores Look Smaller

Large pores are one of the most common skin issues that women deal with on a regular basis. There’s a lot you can do to minimize large pores if you take the time to care for your skin properly. Here are some tips on making your pores look smaller.

1. Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate! Use a combination of exfoliants, especially in the areas where your large pores appear, which is generally the T-zone area. Use facial scrubs and chemical exfoliants on a regular basis to remove dry skin and make your pores appear smaller. Chemical exfoliants can actually get into pores and help clean them out. Just make sure you don’t exfoliate too much or you can make your skin very dry and irritated. If you have sensitive skin, test an exfoliant, especially a chemical one, on one patch of skin before you apply it all over.

2. Next, always wear sunscreen. When you are exposed to UVA and UVB rays they create free radical damage to your skin and that slows down cell production and forces your skin to work harder. This can make your pores look larger.

3. Make sure to wash your face twice a day and use a facial brush to get everything cleaned out from the day. This is especially important if you are sweating or working out. Make sure to cleanse your face after you work out or have been sweating for a while to prevent the sweat from clogging your pores. Bring moist towelettes to the gym for a quick and easy cleanup of your skin.

4. Try retinol-based products. Retinol-based products work by decreasing the closeness of epidermal cells so everything gets removed from the pores. Most of these products are wrinkle reducing products, but they also help reduce large pores.

5. Take steam and open up your pores to remove impurities. Either visit a spa or get a facial that includes a steam or create one at home. This could also be done in a hot, steaming shower. An herbal facial steam can be easily done at home. Simply combine hot water, rose petals, lavender, pansy, rosemary, basil and mint in a large bowl. Cover the top of the bowl with a towel for five minutes then remove the towel and put your face over the steam. Remain under the towel for about 10-15 minutes and inhale the amazing scent. Steam opens up your pores and cleans them out. Rinse with warm water after and pat dry. Apply moisturizer to keep your skin moisturized and healthy.

6. Lastly, treat yourself! You deserve it, pretty lady! Book a spa day or visit your dermatologist and ask for the latest treatments for getting rid of large pores. One of the most popular treatments is microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion peels off the outermost layer of skin, suctioning dirt, hardened oil and blackheads from the pores. When everything comes out, your pores return to a natural, smaller shape since there isn’t anything inside of them. Microdermabrasion also stimulates collagen production and increases elasticity which is great for those with aging skin and keeps pores tight for a longer period of time. Ask spas in your area or your dermatologist for the latest treatments or products for large pores and they will help you determine which procedures or products are best for your specific skin type.

Sunscreen

Is there more to protecting your skin from the sun than just throwing on some sunscreen when you decide to head to the beach? Yes, there’s more. When you head outside to begin your day, make sure you apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before you leave out the house even if the day is gray. Even with the clouds blocking the sun, 80 percent of the UV rays can still pass through. Although you may not be going to the beach, still do not forget to apply sunscreen to more than just your face. Remember to protect your skin that will be exposed to the sun during the day.

They say that you should avoid direct sunlight between 10 am and 4 pm, but your life can’t stop due to the sun. So, when you are out, wear something to protect yourself from the sun's UV rays, like a hat or a light weight long sleeve shirt. If you are headed to the beach, do not assume that just because the bottle says water resistant it will last longer than a normal sunscreen. The waterproof product only lasts about 30 minutes or less depending on how long you spend in the water. While you are enjoying your time at the beach, you get sunburns, but don’t worry about it. Majority of sunburns can be treated with cool baths, over-the-counter creams, aspirins, and/ or moisturizers. Now, don’t think you can run and hide under an umbrella at the beach. You may not feel it, but the sun’s rays can penetrate through the umbrella.

When you are indoors, you should apply a little bit of sunscreen. Your windows may protect against UVB rays, but they do not protect you against UVA rays. UVA rays are the main causes of wrinkles and brown spots on your skin. When shopping for a good sunscreen, make sure to check for a seal of approval. If the sunscreen carries a seal from the American Academy of Dermatology or the Skin Cancer Foundation, only then should you purchase it.  You want a sunscreen that provides a great UV coverage. It’s common for people to forget sunscreen when they head out, don’t be one of those people. Protect your skin at all cost. You’ll thank yourself later!

Homemade Honey Face Wash

Honey Face Wash Simple and natural recipe that nourishes skin and helps fight acne Homemade Honey Face WashHoney

Sound strange? So does cleansing your face with oil, but it turns out that they are both natural and effective ways to cleanse skin naturally.

For this method, raw honey must be used. Raw honey has natural anti-bacterial properties and contains enzymes and probiotics that are good for skin. This method can be especially good for acne-prone skin as it doesn’t stop moisture from the skin but does reduce oils and bacteria. (Acne is usually in internal problem though, so it is important to look at diet too!)

Honey is gentler than soaps, which strip the skin of beneficial oils, and it gently nourishes skin. I know a local vet who has even used raw honey to speed skin healing on animals as it helps reduce bacteria and speed healing while protecting the skin from outside disturbances. This idea appears to have some scientific backing, as there are now medical grade ointments (like this one) that use honey for wound and burn healing in humans.

What I Use:

I’ve personally tried two different types of honey for facial cleansing:

  • Manuka Honey
  • Raw Organic Honey

Both seem to work really well. Manuka honey is considered more cleansing and antibacterial (and has health benefits when used internally) but from what I found, either one works great for skin care (and raw honey is cheaper).

A friend of mine also recommended adding a tiny bit of vitamin C powder (which is also great for skin) and some essential oils for extra anti-bacterial and acne fighting power. Personally, I mix a few drops of lavender and frankincense oils in to the honey I keep in my bathroom.

I also still use the Oil Cleansing Method daily and I use honey for a second wash if needed. Typically, I wash my face at night with the oil cleansing method since it also removes makeup, and wash my face in the morning with the honey method if I use it. I keep a small jar and spoon of honey on my bathroom counter for this purpose….
How to Do it:

Wet face with warm water. Place a small amount of honey in your hands (Usually less than a teaspoon is plenty) and rub your hands together. ( I use this honey)

Massage in to skin in a circular motion to get all areas of the skin.

Optional: Leave on for 5-10 minutes for deep pore cleansing.

Wash off with warm water and pat dry.

Enjoy the soft skin!

What Is The Difference Between Botox & Dermal Fillers?

For those who would like to get rid of wrinkles and don’t want as intensive of a procedure, Botox and dermal fillers have both begun to rise in popularity as skin solutions. Some may be wondering what the difference is between each form of skincare.

Botox aims to get rid of wrinkles that are only noticeable when the face is in motion and are caused by muscle movement. Botox will also aid patients by soothing and softening muscles that have become overused. Recently, Botox was also approved by the FDA for the treatment of excessively sweaty armpits and hands. It is a fast acting treatment, and results will be visible within days.

By injecting Botox directly into the muscle, it impedes the function of the nerve. After a Botox injection, the muscle is temporarily unable to make the movements that lead to skin becoming wrinkled. These are known as dynamic wrinkles and are related to the stress brought upon during facial expressions such as frowning. Crow’s feet and neck lines can also be treated with Botox.

Dermal fillers are recommended for patients who wish to remove their static wrinkles. These are the skincare problems that are visible when the face is in a resting state. When the face ages and begins to lose its elasticity, this shows with the appearance of static wrinkles. After a certain amount of time, static wrinkles become a permanent facial feature.

Dermal fillers are more focused on adding volume that has been lost. It achieves this effect by plumping up the facial tissue, which forces the creases to push outwards and restore the appearance of youth. Fillers also stimulate your body’s natural production of collagen. Dermal fillers also help to restore facial smoothness and take effect almost instantaneously.

Which of these skin solutions is right for you will depend on your particular facial muscles. In certain cases, a combination of the two procedures is needed for those who require skincare solutions for both dynamic and static wrinkles. Many licensed physicians will administer these treatments in concurrence with one another to achieve the best possible results.

It is crucial that you make an appointment and discuss your situation with a trained physician before allowing any medical professional to dispense either of these injections. For some patients, the structure of their forehead can lead to drooping of the eyelids after the treatments. An experienced doctor will be able to discern whether or not you are at any risk for receiving either of these skincare solutions.

Each of these methods have been shown to have effective results and are proven beauty tips. Depending on the nature of your skincare problems, one or both of these treatments may be right for you.  Have you ever tried either of these skin procedures? The Anti Aging Properties Of Olive Oil

Olive oil based cleansers are in vogue for a variety of reasons. For a while, women shunned oil based cleaning solutions, believing they added to the oiliness of their skin. Today, many of them are realizing that natural cleansers, with oil base, are actually good for all skin types, even oily skin. That, and the use of the best anti aging face cream, offers encouraging results to women battling symptoms of skin aging.

The importance of oil

The skin requires some amount of oil to retain a plump, smooth, glowing appearance. This is why having an olive oil based natural cleanser is a good idea for daily skin care. Moreover, harsh, chemical-based cleansers tend to rob moisture from the skin, leading to skin dryness, redness, and also in the long run, wrinkles. Using a natural cleanser, even if it is olive oil based, prevents these problems. Women with all types of skin, be it dry or oily, can use this cleanser. This does away with the problem of figuring out what kind of product goes with their skin.

Vitamins and antioxidants

Since nutrients are very important for the health of skin, the olive oil based product offers the advantage that it is packed with vitamins. Vitamins are important for skin health, but your usual diet might lack these important ingredients, which is why having a product to replenish these nutrients for skin is important.

Olive oil is known for its antioxidant rich constitution. This means that sun damage, which causes photoaging, maybe reversed to some degree, if you use these antioxidant-containing cleansers.

The role of Hydroxatone AM/ PM

Besides taking these steps, you could use the best anti aging face cream in the market to eliminate the appearance of wrinkles. This wrinkle reducing cream has been proven to be effective in the quest for youthful looking skin. Hydroxatone reviews have pointed to this as the best anti aging face cream, due to its power packed cleaning properties, as well as its hydrating capabilities, and its ability to take care of many age-related skin problems.

Reducing Crow's Feet And Lines On The Face With Natural Remedies

The skin around the eyes is thinner than the skin on the rest of the face. This is why lines around the eyes start showing a bit earlier than wrinkles elsewhere on the face. Since the skin is thin, it tends to get dry unless you indulge in proper skin care.

Budget friendly skincare

Skincare need not cost the earth. Some natural remedies offer a nontoxic, budget friendly method to keep your skin beautiful and young looking. Mother nature has already provided a lot of help in this regard, since much of these skincare treatments can be conducted using ingredients from your kitchen cabinet.

For hydrating the skin around the eyes, you could apply thick cream, which has been cooled beforehand, around the eyes. For better results, you could add mashed potato to the cream and blend well. Then, you can apply this mixture around the eyes for a few minutes. After that, gently rinse off the mixture using warm, but not hot water.

This is a great natural remedy to keep the skin around the eyes hydrated as well as reduce puffiness. The swelling and redness tend to make you look older and fatigued. For sparkling young looking eyes, it is important to keep skin around the eyes moisturized.

Wrinkle removing cream

Since crow's feet tend to develop when the skin lacks hydration, your diet is poor, or you have made lifestyle choices that are taking a toll on your health, it is a good idea to use a wrinkle removal product such as Hydroxatone, in addition to natural remedies. Hydroxatone wrinkle removal cream has been proven to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, including crow's feet. It also works to reduce the appearance of deep wrinkles, such as those on the forehead area.

Proper skin care, natural, as well as that using a wrinkle removal cream, will go a long way in ensuring that you look young well into middle age and beyond.

Skin care tips for men

It may sound superficial but the fact remains – people do look at you and tend to judge you based on the image you project. You might be filthy rich but if you don’t look the part you will be the talk of the town. Needless to say, it is important to look your best when you step out or have company.
Contrary to the popular belief, skin care is not just for women! A man’s skin needs attention and nourishment just as much.

Before you start with a skincare routine, you’d need to find out your skin type: oily, normal/combination, dry, sensitive or sun- damaged. And once you’ve figured that out, you might want to know what products to pick, how to use them and also how to ensure they don’t smell too floral/feminine. Here are a few tips that will help you look your very best and of course make a lasting impression.

Start by Cleansing

If you are too lazy to do anything else, cleansing your face is the single most important thing you can do. Search for a good cleanser that your skin responds well to, and stick with it. If possible stay away from bar soaps as they often leave your skin feeling dry. According to Rona Berg, in her book, “Beauty,” a French cosmetics executive once told her, “Soap should only ever touch your skin from the neck down.” Choose a creamy cleanser if you have dry skin or a clear cleanser if you have oily skin. But remember not to overdo it.

To shave or not to shave

Hair growth in men is fairly regular. There’s no need  to shave daily. But whenever you do, ensure to choose a good razor and a shaving gel or cream that yields a close shave, kills bacteria, softens follicles and leaves the skin feeling smooth. Avoid using any shaving products that contain alcohol and parabens as they strip the natural oils from the skin leaving it dry and irritated.

Exfoliation is essential

In order to remove dead skin cells and debris, exfoliation is a must. Moreover it stimulates circulation to add a healthy glow to your skin. A recent study proves that one of the reasons men’s skin looks more youthful than women’s is because men tend to exfoliate daily when they shave.

Moisturize your skin

As men usually have oilier skin than women, they tend to wrinkle just as quickly. A light moisturizer and a nourishing cream can do wonders. If at all shaving irritates your skin, try moisturizing your skin after a shave & ideally before going to bed. A good quality moisturizer includes quality vegetable oils that do not clog pores.

Sunscreen

Celebrity Talk Show host Oprah Winfrey’s magazine ‘O’ ran an article featuring interviews with top skin care experts and dermatologists. Everyone claimed that that sunscreen is the most important part of skincare regime. Sunscreen only works if you use it properly. SPF 15 is a good start but apply it half an hour prior to stepping outdoors. If you plan to stay outdoors for longer, use SPF 30.

All said and done, remember that you need not spend lavishly on expensive lotions and creams. And you don’t need to be worried about carrying the label of a metrosexual anymore. Taking care of skin is perfectly normal. So, think of us as your one-stop resource for all things grooming related and then breathe a sigh of relief because looking your best just got easier.
