What To Do For Dry Scalp

Unless you’re hitting the slopes, cold winter weather usually isn’t much fun. When it’s causing dry, itchy skin, though, it becomes a serious pain.
Because let’s face it – whether you’re dealing with a parched face, scaly legs, or rough elbows, dry skin can be really uncomfortable.

But when you find yourself with dry skin on your scalp, it’s not just about discomfort – it can be embarrassing too. I mean, no one wants unsightly white flakes on the shoulders of their coat, sweater or shirt, right?
So if you’re battling a dry scalp this winter and want to get rid of it as quickly as possible, here are some key tips for maintaining a healthy scalp no matter how cold it might be outside.

1. Find the Cause
When your scalp starts to get dry, itchy, and produce those hard-to-miss flakes, you probably suspect dandruff. But dry scalp and dandruff aren’t the same thing – and dry scalp is usually more common. It occurs when the skin lacks moisture, while dandruff is a fungal condition. Both can cause itching and dry flakes, but the flakes associated with dandruff tend to be larger, yellowish in color, and greasy. With dry scalp, flakes are typically small and white.
Your scalp can become dry for several reasons. As with the skin on the rest of your body, cold winter air can rob your scalp of moisture and leave it itchy and flaky. But you aren’t only at risk for dry scalp in cold weather. Excessive heat styling, harsh, clarifying shampoos, and styling products that tighten as they dry can all do the trick too. Try to figure out the culprit behind your dry scalp so you can address the problem right away.

2. Get Your Scrub On
Just like with dry skin anywhere on your body, exfoliating often helps with a dry scalp. By removing the top layer of dead skin, you’ll get rid of all those annoying flakes and prepare the area to absorb any moisture that you apply. Create a paste with several tablespoons of brown sugar and some olive oil, and use it to scrub your scalp in a circular motion when you’re in the shower. Rinse your hair thoroughly and follow up with your regular shampoo and conditioner.

3. Boost the Moisture
Dry skin lacks moisture, so it needs a serious dose of hydration to get back to normal. If you’ve been using a strong clarifying shampoo or a formula designed for dandruff control to get rid of your flakes, you’re actually doing more harm than good. Instead, switch to a moisturizing shampoo such as the Paul Mitchell Lavender Mint Moisturizing Shampoo or the Aveeno Nourish + Moisturize Shampoo to ensure that your scalp is properly hydrated.

If you’re using a moisturizing shampoo and your scalp is still dry, try a hot oil treatment like the L’Oreal Paris Hair Expertise Oleo Therapy Self-Heating Hot Oil for more intensive hydration.

4. Cool Off
When you’re dealing with dry scalp in the winter, it’s probably hard to think of too much heat as a bad thing – but it can dry out your skin big time, so it’s best to reduce the amount that your scalp receives. That means cutting back on blow drying as much as possible. One way to limit your need for a dryer is to wash your hair every other or every few days. Not only does it stop you from having to blow dry your tresses every day, it allows the natural oils in your scalp to build up and keep the area moisturized.

But when you do wash your hair, don’t use hot water. Opt for cool or lukewarm water that won’t strip the skin and leave it dry.

facial serums | what are they & why do i need them

facial serums | what are they & why do i need them

What are serums

Serums are more concentrated then the regular run of the mill daily moisturizer. They are meant to treat facial concerns such as redness, dark spots, fine lines, wrinkles, dehydration, dullness, and the like. Most are on the thicker side- but are a liquid formula- and their formulas include powerful antioxidants and vitamins. Serums also come in specific facial features- meaning they make one for all over the face and ones that are just for the under eye area.

How do you use serums

Serums are meant to be added to your daily skin routine- but some can also be used as a standalone product at night (ie. dr. brandt® glow by dr. brandt® overnight resurfacing serum).

When adding to your daily skin routine, wash your face, use toner, smooth the serum all over your face, wait for your face to dry, and then layer your moisturizer over the serum. Once everything is dry, add your makeup and do what you usually do. Basically: wash -> tone -> serum -> moisturize

Of course if using a toner irritates your skin, then skip it. The main thing is to add the serum to your face before moisturizing.

Why should I add a serum to my beauty routine

Serums are able to penetrate the deeper layers of skin that your regular moisturizer is unable to.

Where can I buy serums

Honestly, you can buy serums almost anywhere nowadays. And they really aren't that expensive. Target has a nice array of eye and face serums to fit every budget, as do BirchboxSephora, and Ulta. And I'm relatively sure Walgreens, Amazon, and Walmart do too.

How do I pick a serum

There are so many serums on the market today, and it's really hard to decide which one is for you, especially if you are wanting to pay a pretty penny for a good one.

First, you need to figure out what serum you are looking for- face, eyes, all over, or both. If you don't know, it's ok- you are probably just wanting a general- all over- serum then.

Second, you need to figure out what you are trying to correct. Do you suffer from redness, fine lines, dark spots, etc. and want to correct that? Since some serums are facial ailment specific, it helps to know. But don't worry- there is a good amount of serums out there that actually do everything.

Third, I would recommend that you make a trip to Sephora and try some serum samples out. Most of the customer service ladies should know their serums/face products, so ask them questions- they can point you int he right direction. And you can try up to three samples on each visit- just tell them you are in the market for a serum and need to find the right one for you.

Home Remedies for Skin Care Issues: Tackling Pimples and Pimple Scars

Pimples are irritating. They are one of the worst nightmares for a woman. And pimple scars? They are like death . . . of beauty.

Home-Remedies-to-Rid-Your-Skin-of-Stretch-Marks

Tons of confidence won’t do what just five things for skin care can do.

The First Thing
Cinnamon, a common spice in the kitchen, can now give you good skin. Never imagined it, right? Cinnamon’s essential oil possesses a powerful antimicrobial property. Honey has low water activity, so it contains less moisture, which discourages microbe growth. Dermatologists say that pimples erupt from skin pore infections. So, combining honey with cinnamon is a smart way to curb pimples.

Do this: Mix some drops of honey into cinnamon powder, and make a paste. Please don’t add water. Dab some paste on the pimples and let it stay overnight. Wash your face the next morning with lukewarm water.

The Second Thing
Lemon can be your best friend when it comes to killing pimples. It has phytonutrients, known as flavonoids, and Vitamin C. Flavonoids are powerful antioxidants and exhibit strong antibiotic action. They prohibit the action of free radicals. Skin experts love lemons when it comes to acne-prone skin care.

Do this: Dab some fresh lemon juice directly on the pimple. Let it stay overnight. Wash it off the next morning.

Mix one tablespoon of groundnut oil in the same amount of fresh lemon juice. Apply the mixture all over your face. This is a preventive measure against pimples. This also works on blackheads.

Expert comment: Please do not venture out in the sun immediately after applying lemon juice on your face as the juice can make your skin more sensitive to the sun.

The Third Thing
Try tomatoes. They possess an acidic nature. Tomato pulp dries up pimples and tightens skin pores. This decreases pore blockage. Tomatoes are loaded with antioxidants. They decrease damage and inflammation of the skin.

Do this: Take the freshly squeezed pulp of a tomato, and apply it directly on the pimple. Do this just once a day as it can be drying to the skin. In case you feel excessive drying or irritation on skin, add some water to the pulp to dilute its acidity, and then apply it.

The Fourth Thing
Good old turmeric, which is famous in India for healing wounds, can be an excellent remedy for skin care. Medical experts have established its healing properties. According to them, it contains elements that give turmeric a strong antimicrobial quality.

Consumption and application of turmeric help to keep your skin healthy and flawless. Don’t believe it? Ask your Indian friends!

This is what you can do with turmeric:
·         Apply a little bit of turmeric directly on the skin by forming a paste with rosewater.
·         Mix a pinch of turmeric powder in warm milk, and gulp it down. It heals skin infections from the inside. You can even eat raw turmeric slices as salad. It purifies the blood, which in turn, improves your skin health.
·         Make a paste of a little turmeric powder and coconut oil. Apply it directly on your pimple, and leave it overnight. Wash it off with water.
·         Take some ground, dried Neem leaves, and make a paste by adding equal quantities of turmeric powder and rosewater to it. Apply it on your pimples. Let it stay for 15 to 20 minutes. Wash it off with water. You can replace Neem powder with sandalwood powder. Where Neem has antimicrobial properties, sandalwood has a soothing effect on the face.

The Fifth Thing
This is for those nasty pimple scars. Again, sandalwood is the best choice, say experts.

Do this: Soak a sandalwood piece in water for several hours. Take the piece out, dry it, and store it. You can reuse it. Now, take a swab of cotton, and dip it in the sandalwood water. Smear it on your pimple scars. Repeat this daily for a week or two. You will notice a difference in your complexion.

You also can make a paste of sandalwood and rosewater. Apply it on acne scars, and let them stay overnight. Wash your face with cold water the next morning.

There is no end to home remedies for skin care, especially skin that is prone to pimples and damaged by scars. Pick a remedy that works best on your skin. Dermatologists are of the view that elements lying on your kitchen shelves are safer and more effective than those lying on market shelves. This may not be a hard and fast rule, but home remedies do work. Try them. What you will get is better-looking skin in the end.

Styling Tips for Fine Hair

Stylist drying hair of a female client at the beauty salon

If you have fine hair, you know the frustration of trying to style your hair. Curls never stay curly for long and your hair can turn limp, lifeless and greasy in an instant. Here are some tricks on getting the hair you want more easily:

1. Cleanse your scalp properly. Shampoo your hair only at the roots and the scalp. If you shampoo the rest of your hair thoroughly, it will only dry out your hair. Flip your hair over in the shower and scrub your scalp.

2. You may not even need conditioner if your hair gets very oily, but if you like a little conditioning, use only a little and avoid the scalp. Too much conditioner at your roots can weigh your hair down.

3. Use a volumizing mousse. Look for one with no synthetic fragrances but one that is hydrating with essential oils. This will hydrate and protect your hair and give you the volume you crave. Also experiment with light hairspray and teasing to give your hair a boost.

4. Use your products wisely. Use a volumizing mousse on damp hair a few inches away from the scalp, work through the ends and then use a volumizing spray all over. Allow your hair to air dry before you straighten or curl it because additional styling to wet hair can make it appear thinner. This being said, don’t use a lot of products at once as this will just weigh down your hair and make it appear even thinner.

5. If you do need to dry your hair to head out quickly, flip your hair upside down and dry it that way. It will maximize volume.

6. Choose a signature style that works best for your specific hair type. Ask your hairstylist what style and products will work best with your hair type and play around with a few different types before you pick one you love.

7. Lastly, just love the hair you have! Thick haired girls often wish their hair was a little thinner and your hair looks great in ponytails and many styles. Try different styles and cuts and be thankful for the hair you’ve been given.

How to Properly Apply Eye Shadow

Ladies, let’s face it. In our lifetime, we’ve all pointed out at least one woman to our friends who was the embodiment of a walking makeup disaster. Whether it’s cakey foundation or blotchy, uneven eye shadow, there are certain makeup mistakes that are practically felonious.

For years now, I’ve been giving people makeovers and always get asked for tips and lessons. So I’ve decided to share my top tips and tricks once and for all.

Tip #1: Primer. Get acquainted with your new best friend. Applying primer underneath your eye shadow will make the colors pop more and last way longer. By the end of the night, you’ll still be looking like the goddess you left your house as, instead of like a swamp beast. My favorite eye shadow primer is Urban Decay Potion Tube.

Tip #2: Use the right tools for the job. Makeup brushes make a huge difference when it comes to applying makeup. There are hundreds of brushes out there and each one has its own specific use. Don’t be afraid to splurge on quality makeup brushes. Instead of becoming a cat lady, I’ll probably become a makeup brush lady, but it really is worth it- I Swear! And if you take good care of them and wash them regularly, they’ll last you years! I personally use MAC makeup brushes and absolutely love them.

Tip #3: Blending is key. I’m a big believer in mixing colors. Start out with three different shades- a base, a highlighter and a main color. Take the lightest shade and use it as a base, all over your lids and up to your brow. Then, use the next darkest color and blend from the outside of your eye along your crease. Next, use the darkest color and apply in a sideways “v” shape starting with the outer corner of your eye. Lastly, blend blend blend! You don’t want to see where one color ends and another begins.

Note: Remember- have a light hand, less is more! It’s much easier to apply more than to go back and start over if you pile too much on. And NEVER apply a dark color to your brow bone – unless the finished look you’re going for is drag queen.

Tip #4: Eyeliner. Apply eyeliner as close to your top lashes as you can get it. If you’re applying heavy eye shadow, line your watermark with white eyeliner to make your eyes pop and look bigger.

Tip #5: Got wrinkles? Lay off the shimmer. Glitter is my favorite color, so I understand how upsetting this might be. However, glitter eye shadow highlights lines and wrinkles, so if you have lines around your eyelids stick to matte colors.

Tip #6: Play up one feature at a time. Accentuate lips OR eyes, not both! You don’t want to look too over done or have your makeup looking too dramatic. If you’re rocking a dark smoky eye, pair it with nude lips. Donning a glamorous red lip? Stick to neutral or a light gold eye shadow.

A peptide complex called Pal-KTTKS proves advantageous in anti-aging products

A study of more than 6,000 women seeking natural, noticeable results from their skin care products reveals that most women feel that fine lines, wrinkles, and dryness are common signs of aging. Participants said wrinkles made them appear older than they actually were. They also felt sagging skin, particularly along the jawline, was disturbing. Thinner, dryer, less-pliable skin was also a common complaint when participants were asked about skin and aging.

This led researchers to conduct studies to determine what causes aging at the skin’s surface. One of the primary differences between young and old skin is that aged skin loses its ability to repair itself from damage caused by free radicals. The result is wrinkles, loss of texture, impaired barrier function, dryness, sagging, and age spots.

As we age, the natural cycle of skin regeneration slows. Our skin produces less protein, so the outer layer of skin becomes thinner and less resilient. Then, as the collagen structure weakens, the skin loses its elasticity, and fine lines and wrinkles appear. Our skin loses that healthy, youthful resilience we are all striving to maintain.

There are some powerful ingredients that can help to retain precious moisture. Certain types of peptides, short combinations of amino acids, send signals to fibroblasts to begin generating new proteins. Fibroblasts are particular types of cells that are responsible for producing the supporting structure of the skin, including collagen.

A topical Pal-KTTKS application has been shown to reduce the appearance of wrinkles while also being gentle to the moisture barrier. Pal-KTTKS is a peptide otherwise known as palmitoyl-pentapeptide 3. It is a modified chain of five amino acids developed as a cosmetic active ingredient. With Pal-KTTKS, the cycle of regeneration can begin again.

In studies by Proctor and Gamble, the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology reported on the efficacy of Pal-KTTKS on crow’s feet. Two studies were conducted in women 30 to 70 years old with moderate to distinct wrinkles around the eye. Four products which included -KTTKS peptide complex and SPF 30 daytime lotion were used daily. Results indicated that after 4 weeks of treatment, there was improvement in the smoothness of skin around the eyes, thus showing reduced depth of wrinkles.

Another study presented to the World Congress on Dermatology supported the conclusion that Pal-KTTKS was safe and effective in improving the appearance of photo-aged skin, or skin that has had significant sun exposure over time. Pal-KTTKS is commercially known as Matrixyl and can be found in various skin creams.

Matrixyl is the peptide sequence of Pal-KTTKS, or micronized collagen. Collagen is the most abundant protein in the skin, and as we age, the body makes less of it. Matrixyl helps the skin produce more collagen. It gives visible and long-lasting results to aging skin. Pal-KTTKS aids in reducing deep lines and wrinkles by helping skin cells to stimulate bioactive collagen synthesis. The skin cells will then produce more collagen from within that can be used to add to the existing structural tissues.

Craters on your face? Here how to get rid of acne’s evidence

I remember a time when when I would be constantly waiting for that huge volcano of pus on my forehead to erupt. I picked it, then it turned into my “third eye” (or that’s what my sister called it…), then scabbed for weeks until finally, just a dark spot remained. Years later, the evidence of my acne misgivings still shows.

I once thought the scars were the price I have to pay for my inability to stop picking, just like my mom said. But as it turns out, there are ways to treat the worst of acne scars. Once you understand a little more about your “craters,” you might find the ideal solution for them.

Why does my acne still show?

I had severe acne in my teens, and the occasional beast would rear its ugly head throughout my 20s. But I haven’t had a severe breakout in years. I always thought my skin would magically turn smooth once I stopped breaking out, but let’s just say I’m still waiting. The evidence of my past pizza-face self is almost as telling as the actual zits. Ugh!
Acne scars are particularly long-lasting because the skin on your face is super sensitive, and acne causes a lot of inflammation. The more sensitive your skin, the more likely it is to scar after an injury (which is even more likely if you were a chronic picker, breaking the skin).

However, even if you never picked a zit, some breakouts are enough to cause a scar. The body has a strong response to acne bacteria, leading to intense inflammation. When your skin is inflamed for a long time, scarring is bound to occur.

Ice pick? Boxcar? What kind of scar do I have?

You might see your acne scars as a mishmash of marks that resemble the zits they once were, but dermatologists have been able to categorize acne scars into four groups. Even though most people have more than one type of acne scar, knowing which ones you have is helpful when determining which treatment will get rid of them.

• Ice pick. “Ice pick” scarring is characterized by a bunch of small pits on the skin that give your face the appearance of being dug out with a tiny ice pick.

• Boxcar. Scars that are angular with sharp vertical edges are called “boxcar” scars, and are most common on the cheeks and temples. They can be deep or shallow pits on the skin.

• Rolling. If your acne causes severe damage under your skin, you may have “rolling” scars, which are wide and shallow and give the skin a “wavy” appearance.

• Hypertrophic. Cystic acne or other serious acne lesions can often result in hypertrophic scars, which are raised and lumpy because of all the scar tissue underneath. They are more common on back and chest, but may also occur on the face and neck.

Erasing the evidence
Once you know which type of scar you have, it might be easier to figure out what kind of treatment will work to erase them. Of course, always consult with your dermatologist. The skin doc is the best person to “diagnose” your scars and explain the best treatments for them.

• Topical. There are over-the-counter and prescription ointments, gels and creams that might help for minor scarring. Vitamin E and aloe vera are both known for their healing abilities, but corticosteroids are also commonly recommended.
• Procedures. There are a number of procedures dermatologists offer that can reduce the appearance of scars, or fill them in altogether. Laser resurfacing, skin grafting, microdermabrasion and “punch” techniques can make a huge difference. Punch techniques essentially punch out the scar then sew up the skin, which leaves a smaller scar that is easier to heal. There are also incisions that are best for rolling acne scars, allowing the skin to lift out of the scar’s depression.

• Injections. Dermal fillers and steroids are commonly used to get rid of scars, too. A dermal filler takes a substance like hyaluronic acid, collagen or your own fat and injects it into the site, lifting the depressed region. Steroid treatments are better for hypertrophic scars – injected into the site, they help the scar tissue shrink or flatten.

It’s important to note that not all acne scars can be magically erased, even with the most advanced technology. But remember, our little imperfections are what make us unique! If that acne scar on your forehead has become a part of who you are, by all means, leave it be!

Hydroxatone AM/PM Anti-Wrinkle Complex Review

Please pardon the appearance and space below the above photo as I am experiencing technical difficulties. Thank you for your patience and understanding. I was recently given the opportunity to try Hydroxatone AM/PM Anti-Wrinkle Complex by iFabbo and was quite pleased with the results. I haven’t been sleeping well lately and wrinkles are starting to appear and surface below and on the corners of my eyes. I have always had insomnia but more so ever since I lost my dad when he passed away. Taking care of an ill parent like I have and having additional responsibilities can be taxing. That explains why I haven’t been actively writing as much the last so many months. Sleep deprivation, stress and hard times can sure make anyone age quicker. A tough life will take its toll.

I started using Hydroxatone AM/PM Anti-Wrinkle Complex and started seeing quick results and my new wrinkles and fine lines diminish. It smoothed my fine lines. The Hyaluronic Acid it contains has the incredible ability to retain moisture in the skin which results in increased smoothness and the decrease of facial wrinkles. The ingredient called Matrixyl3000 helps skin promote natural levels of collagen, hyaluronic acid and fibronectin. Hydroxatone AM/PM Anti-Wrinkle Complex also contains argireline, an anti-aging peptide specifically designed to provide fast results and SPF 15 to help protect the skin against the sun’s harmful rays. This is what makes Hydroxatone’s AM/PM Anti-Wrinkle Complex so effective. I completely recommend it for anyone who wants to decrease their facial wrinkles, smooth fine lines, prevent aging and keep their skin moist, smooth and young. Hydroxatone wants to make you look and feel younger. Hydroxatone AM/PM Anti-Wrinkle Complex is available for purchase at Ulta online at http://bit.ly/10wcldz for $69. Enjoy! Thank you iFabbo for giving me the opportunity to try this effective and outstanding beauty product.

10 Foods And 10 Natural Skin Care Solutions That Can Prevent Early Aging Of Skin

Aging is something nobody looks forward to, much less its visible effects. Including a few natural skin care practices in one’s self-care can easily prevent, or at least delay, the aging process.
The truth is, our skin is prone to feeling the effects of aging in the form of wrinkles and change in texture due to a number of factors. However, the good news is, you don’t really have to spend a lot to enjoy youthful skin for a long time.
There are many natural solutions that include foods that prevent early aging of skin and some do’s and don’ts. But first let us understand exactly how the aging process takes place before we get to skin care.

What causes the skin to sag? The skin is made up of several layers. The topmost layer, which is just under the skin visible to us, is made of a framework of two proteins called collagen and elastin that keep the skin supple and smooth and in shape. Over the years, this layer becomes weaker, making the skin lose its elasticity. Besides this, there are also other reasons such as the thinning of skin due to the loss of fat.

Gravity also plays a role, causing the skin to sag. There’s also genetics where some people inherit firm skin and some do not. So, while aging cannot actually be avoided, certain steps can be taken to ensure that the skin maintains its shape for as long as possible.

One of the most common reasons for skin damage is exposure to the sun. The sun’s UV rays enter the skin and weaken the protein framework, causing it to sag. Too much sun on the skin can also cause spots and wrinkles.
How to prevent the effects of aging on skin?

Here are 10 natural skin care solutions that will keep your skin looking young:

1. Avoid exposure to the sun. If you have to go out, protect your skin with sunblock. Remember to also protect your hair. Minimize the time you spend in the afternoon sun as this is when the rays are most destructive on the skin.

2. Stop smoking. Smoking creates wrinkles, in addition to arresting the blood circulation to your face. This results in crow’s feet and drooping skin around the eyes.

3. Cut down on alcohol. Too much alcohol shows on the skin, and also on your overall health. Drinking also keeps you from eating healthy and the lack of nutritious food speeds up the aging of skin.

4. Exercise regularly. This keeps up healthy blood circulation, nourishing the skin inside out, letting it breathe and remain firm. 5. Skip junk food. Include at least five helpings of fruits and vegetables in your diet.

6. Get enough sleep. Sleep helps our body rejuvenate and rest itself, keeping us healthy. 7. Maintain good hygiene by keeping your skin clean and free from dirt. If you sweat profusely, make sure to wash your sweat off.

8. Invest in a good moisturizer for your skin to keep it soft and smooth.

9. Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated. 10. Avoid harsh skin care products that can rapidly age your skin.

The skin needs antioxidants and vitamins to stay healthy. Now let’s look at ten foods that can help you keep your skin looking great:

1. Vegetables and fresh fruits must be part of any healthy diet. In particular, focus on tomatoes, leafy greens, carrots and citrus fruits and veggies.

2. Complex carbohydrates like oats, which also have a low Glycemic Index, help keep your skin healthy. Too much sugar and foods whose GI is high can result in skin problems like acne and wrinkles. Include whole grains in your diet.

3. Oranges are good for your skin as they keep it moisturized and supply you with the vitamin C you need. Vitamin C is necessary for collagen formation, which keeps your skin flexible.

4. Avocado, the super-fruit is an excellent source of monosaturated fat, which is the right type of fat to consume. It gives your skin the vitamins it needs. Other sources of good fats are olives and walnuts

5. Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, kale and collard greens are a great source of vitamin A and C and folate. These protect your skin from damage due to exposure to the sun.

6. Grapes, which are a source of anti-oxidants, also heal inflammation of the skin.

7. Omega-3 prevents cancer. Get your dose from flax seeds, walnuts, eggs and milk.

8. Antioxidants repair and guard your skin cells. Some good sources for this are berries like strawberries, pomegranate and cherries.

9. Beans are a great source of is flavones which promote anti-aging. 10. Water is perhaps the most important anti-aging food for skin. Make sure you get at least eight or ten glasses each day. Remember that too much caffeine can result in unhealthy skin.

If you suffer from prematurely aging skin, you can still take action and arrest the aging process with the above stated natural skin care tips.
