How to Properly Apply Eye Shadow

Ladies, let’s face it. In our lifetime, we’ve all pointed out at least one woman to our friends who was the embodiment of a walking makeup disaster. Whether it’s cakey foundation or blotchy, uneven eye shadow, there are certain makeup mistakes that are practically felonious.

For years now, I’ve been giving people makeovers and always get asked for tips and lessons. So I’ve decided to share my top tips and tricks once and for all.

Tip #1: Primer. Get acquainted with your new best friend. Applying primer underneath your eye shadow will make the colors pop more and last way longer. By the end of the night, you’ll still be looking like the goddess you left your house as, instead of like a swamp beast. My favorite eye shadow primer is Urban Decay Potion Tube.

Tip #2: Use the right tools for the job. Makeup brushes make a huge difference when it comes to applying makeup. There are hundreds of brushes out there and each one has its own specific use. Don’t be afraid to splurge on quality makeup brushes. Instead of becoming a cat lady, I’ll probably become a makeup brush lady, but it really is worth it- I Swear! And if you take good care of them and wash them regularly, they’ll last you years! I personally use MAC makeup brushes and absolutely love them.

Tip #3: Blending is key. I’m a big believer in mixing colors. Start out with three different shades- a base, a highlighter and a main color. Take the lightest shade and use it as a base, all over your lids and up to your brow. Then, use the next darkest color and blend from the outside of your eye along your crease. Next, use the darkest color and apply in a sideways “v” shape starting with the outer corner of your eye. Lastly, blend blend blend! You don’t want to see where one color ends and another begins.

Note: Remember- have a light hand, less is more! It’s much easier to apply more than to go back and start over if you pile too much on. And NEVER apply a dark color to your brow bone – unless the finished look you’re going for is drag queen.

Tip #4: Eyeliner. Apply eyeliner as close to your top lashes as you can get it. If you’re applying heavy eye shadow, line your watermark with white eyeliner to make your eyes pop and look bigger.

Tip #5: Got wrinkles? Lay off the shimmer. Glitter is my favorite color, so I understand how upsetting this might be. However, glitter eye shadow highlights lines and wrinkles, so if you have lines around your eyelids stick to matte colors.

Tip #6: Play up one feature at a time. Accentuate lips OR eyes, not both! You don’t want to look too over done or have your makeup looking too dramatic. If you’re rocking a dark smoky eye, pair it with nude lips. Donning a glamorous red lip? Stick to neutral or a light gold eye shadow.

P.S : We are introducing our new Beauty Advisor box! The best part is, your first welcoming box is FREE and features two of our favorite products!
